The tram Constantine is a building under construction tram system in the city of Constantine in northeastern Algeria. The first section was put into operation on July 4, 2013. It is 8.9 km long, consists of ten stations and runs from Ramdhan Ben Abdelmalek Stadium for Zouaghi district in the south of the city.

Construction

With the turnkey construction of the tram Constantine the groups Pizzarotti and Alstom were commissioned. Pizzarotti was responsible for the engineering and road construction. Alstom supplied the equipment ( tracks, energy supply, catenary, signaling, telecommunication, automatic fare collection ), built the depot in Zouaghi and vehicles. Construction began in August 2008.

Operation

On 24 May 2012, the Paris RATP Group announced that it has received as part of a consortium with local partners, the contract for the operation and maintenance of all Algerian tram systems. The RATP group leads this consortium, Société d'exploitation of tramways ( Setram ). 49% of the shares in Setram keeps the RATP, 36 % Algiers transport companies ETUSA and 15% of the Algerian underground society EMA. Since October 1, 2012 this joint venture is responsible under the direction of Pierre Schbath the management including the preparation of operating and recording of maintenance and repair of all Algerian tram systems ( with the exception of maintenance in Algiers ).

After a month with free test drives of the scheduled time of operation on July 4, 2013 were included. The plans are based on 70 000 passengers per day.

The cost of the construction of the tram Constantine came to 44 billion dinars and were three times as high as the initial estimate. With construction costs of 4.88 billion dinars per kilometer they were higher than for the trams in Algiers and Oran.

The fare was set for recording operation of the SETRAM to 40 dinars for a single journey and 320 dinars for a 10-trip card. Later, time cards are to be introduced.

Rolling stock

The tram Constantine has 27 cars of the type Citadis 402 They were manufactured by Alstom Transport in the Spanish plant in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda. The first car was delivered on 24 September 2011. The seven-part low-floor multi -joint bi-directional vehicles are 43 meters long.

Further plans

The Algerian authorities are planning to extend the range of the previous terminus Zouaghi addition, with two branches in the south. A 2.7 km long branch line to open up the Mohamed Boudiaf Airport. The other road will lead to the town of Ali Mendjeli.
