Conte Candoli

Secondo " Conte " Candoli ( born July 12, 1927 in Mishawaka, Indiana, † December 14, 2001 ) was an American jazz trumpeter of cool jazz.

Life and work

Conte Candoli was the younger brother of Pete Candoli and learned from him the trumpet. He played with Sonny Dunham (1940 ), Will Bradley (1941 ), Benny Goodman and Ray McKinley (1942 ), with Tommy Dorsey ( 1943-1944 ). Between 1944 and 1946 he worked in the band of Woody Herman and took his degree at this time in high school after. From 1947 to 1948 he played with Tex Beneke. It was followed by engagements with Stan Kenton (1948 ), Charlie Ventura (1949 ) and Woody Herman (1950). He then worked " freelance " in California, was back with Stan Kenton ( 1952-1954 ) active and played on the album New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm. Candoli had its own orchestra 1954-55 and played with Les Brown, Bill Holman and Terry Gibbs. Beginning of the 60s he was a member of a short time the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band and went with her on tour in Europe.

He belonged to the environment of the West Coast jazz to Richie Kamuca, Rolf Ericson, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Shorty Rogers, Jimmy Giuffre, Hampton Hawes, Shelly Manne, Herb Geller, Stan Levey, Chet Baker, Russ Freeman, Art Pepper, Barney Kessel and Frank Rosolino.
