Contessa Entellina

Contessa Entellina is a city in the province of Palermo in the Italian region Sicily, with 1846 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Contessa Entellina is 75 km south of Palermo. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Bisacquino, Campofiorito, Corleone, Giuliana, Monreale, Poggio Reale ( TP), Roccamena, Salaparuta ( TP), Sambuca di Sicilia ( AG) and Santa Margherita di Belice ( AG).

History

The town was founded in 1450 by the Arbëresh. Even before this time, the Greeks settled here. 1875 the name Contessa was added in memory of the ancient city Entella the addition Entellina. Entella was located near the present village and was destroyed in 1224.
