Context Adaptive Variable Length Coding

CAVLC ( Context Adaptive Variable Length Coding) describes a context-dependent run-length encoding and is a kind of lossless entropy coding. One application of CAVLC is the video compressor MPEG-4/Part10 ( H.264/AVC ). The design of the CAVLC was designed so that it may use as many as possible characteristics of the MPEG quantization. Peculiarities of MPEG quantization include

  • The initial amount mainly contains zeros ( zeros )
  • The highest values are at the beginning of the initial volume and low end
  • The highest values in the output quantity are often sequences of 1 and -1

A compressed with CAVLC data stream is compared to a compressed using the compute-intensive CABAC stream by about 10-20 % larger.
