Convention of Kütahya

As the Treaty of Kutahya is called the peace treaty between Muhammad Ali Pasha and Sultan Mahmud II. He ended the Egyptian- Ottoman War in May 1833.

Prehistory

Egypt, which was part of the Ottoman Empire since 1517 Sultan Selim I in the year, won its independence under Muhammad Ali Pasha de facto. Muhammad Ali Pasha offered to the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II to subdue the restless province of Syria. In return, he wanted to be as governor in Syria. After the Sultan refused him, occupied Egyptian troops under Ibrahim Pasha, son of Muhammad Ali Pasha in 1831 Palestine and Syria. On May 27, 1832 stormed Acre and Damascus on June 18. The Egyptian troops advanced after victories over the Ottomans in Homs ( July 7 ) and Konya ( in December 1832) to Anatolia before. On April 8, 1833 Treaty of Kutahya was closed and Muhammad Ali's rule over Syria for the time being recognized.

Agreement

The agreement was brokered by the major European powers. A Russian expeditionary force was sent to the Bosporus, to put pressure on the Egyptian ruler. Given the defeat in the war Mahmud II made extensive commitments, as the contract the renegade governor Muhammad Ali on suitable control over the provinces of Hijaz and Crete and his reign officially recognized. His son Ibrahim Pasha was given dominion over the Syrian provinces. Officially remained Muhammad Ali still a vassal status to the Ottoman Sultan.
