Convict Schlankcichlide ( Julidochromis regani )

The Convict Schlankcichlide ( Julidochromis regani, even Regan Schlankcichlide ) is an African cichlid and belongs to the genus Julidochromis. Since the species of this genus in behavior, appearance and Haltungsanprüchen are relatively uniform will be discussed here only the peculiarities of this kind. General information can be found in the article to the genus.

Appearance

While the other Julidochromis species have only three ( more or less pronounced ) horizontal stripes, the Convict Schlankcichlide four horizontal, black to dark brown stripes. The lowest of these strips is not quite as clear and distinct as the rest is hardly or not to recognize in young fish. The white cheek-stripe of J. regani can, depending on the mood, show a whitish- blue shimmer. On the fins (except the pectoral fins ) some colors have a light blue shimmering hem.

However, there are also several color options ( for example, J. regani Kipili ) seem to have the horizontal at first glance only three stripes and therefore the Yellow Schlankcichliden (J. ornatus ) look very similar. Here we find the fourth stripe only on the cheek of the fish, which we can distinguish these subspecies of J. ornatus. Depending on the color variants, the only fish on the back, on the back and abdomen or the whole body are yellowish.

J. regani is up to 13 cm tall. Partial -to-find size information of up to 30 cm are simply wrong and can only be explained by a number Dreher (thirty instead of thirteen ).

Propagation

Convict Schlankcichliden live together in pairs. The female attaches a lot, sometimes more than 200 eggs on the wall of a cave or crevice. The eggs have a relatively hard shell and are oval and cream with a diameter of less than two millimeters. J. regani operates breeding floor, so there live several generations of young fish with the parents. Older juveniles behave their part significantly smaller siblings over non- aggressive.

The fry remain initially in the immediate vicinity of the cave, expand with increasing size but its radius. However, when many older siblings convey a greater sense of security also swim a few millimeters large juveniles through the entire area of the parents.

Very small juveniles ( under 1 cm) differ in their drawing significantly from the adolescent and adult animals. For them, the fourth strip is not yet visible. Instead, show them in vertical strips so that they could consider themselves descendants of Julidochromis marlieri.

If should not be grown on the amount must not be targeted juveniles fed or otherwise cared for. A sufficient in a well retracted aquarium feed and protected by their parents.
