Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet

Cookin 'with the Miles Davis Quintet is a jazz album, which was recorded in October 1956 by the Miles Davis Quintet and released by Prestige Records the following year. It is the first of four albums that were released from the legendary recording sessions of 11 May and 26 October 1956. This fulfilled the trumpeter, who had been transferred to the major label, Columbia Records, his contract with Prestige.

Background

The tracks on the album were part of the repertoire of the group. The concept of the meetings was to record this live repertoire in studio sessions. In the two studio sessions Miles Davis called the pieces that should be played, just as it would for a live program in a club, there was only one take. A total of 24 pieces were added, and the remaining pieces were published on three more albums.

Asked about the album title, Davis said:

" After all, that's what we did, came in and cooked. "

" After all that's what we did - we came in and cooked. "

More Releases

The album was originally released in the U.S. in 1987 on CD. Recently it was by Rudy Van Gelder, the sound engineer of the original sessions, remastered in 2006 for Prestige Records.

Reception

Lindsay planners rated the album at Allmusic with four and a half out of five stars and wrote:
