The Cooperativa di Consumatori, short coop, is the largest Italian retail chain. It operates supermarkets and hypermarkets ( Ipercoop ) and the discounters Dico. Coop markets are mainly in the north and center of Italy.

Overview

The first consumer cooperative of Italy was founded in 1854 in Turin.

Today the Coop consists of 135 companies of different sizes and customer expansion. The larger co-op markets are largely national, whereas the small branches are organized regionally. Although the individual companies are legally and administratively independent, they are under the main organization Coop Italia.

Coop is the largest among the Italian retail chains: in 2006, a market share of 17.9 % and a turnover of 11.8 billion euros was achieved. Italy Far, there are 1,331 stores.

Organization

Supermarkets of the coop Group can be divided into four categories:

  • Small supermarkets (so-called superette, to 1,000 m²) only carry a limited range of foods and are mostly found in city centers. They act under the name INCOOP.
  • Medium supermarkets (up to 2,000-2,500 m ) perform a wider range of foods.
  • Large supermarkets or superstores (up to 3,000-3,500 m ) carry a wide assortment of foods and even a small amount of items of daily use.
  • Hypermarkets ( 4000-15000 m ) lead a very wide range of foods, goods and enjoyment of everyday items as well as electrical and engineering departments, in individual cases, opticians and pharmacies. They act Ipercoop under the name
