Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake

The cheese races (English name The Cooper 's Hill Cheese - Rolling and Wake ) is a four-day recreational or entertainment event at Cooper's Hill in Brockworth, Gloucestershire, UK. The participants run after a wheel of cheese, rolling down a hill.

The tradition goes back to Roman times supposedly. What is certain is that it is carried out for 200 years.

According to the organizers is on the premises accommodate a maximum of 5,000 participants. After 2009 15.000 visitors came to the event in 2010 was canceled because of concerns about security. However, 2011, the event will be carried out again.

Each year, a loaf of Gloucester cheese is rolled down in each of the four rounds of the Cooper 's Hill. Since cheese a speed of about 70 mph can reach ( about 110 km / h) and gets given a little " jump" upstream of the athletes, this goal is difficult to achieve. In each case, the fastest man and the fastest woman are considered as winner.

Because of food rationing a wooden dummy has been used from 1941 to 1954.
