Cooperation procedure

The cooperation procedure (also co-operation procedure, of Engl. Cooperation procedure ) was one of the legislative process in the regulation of EC and was abolished by the Treaty of Lisbon.

By the Treaty of Amsterdam, there was a large number of different legislative procedures and the legislative process was very confusing. The cooperation procedure (introduced by the Single European Act in 1987 ) gave the European Parliament for the first time the possibility to influence them in the second reading of the Commission's legislative proposals to the legislative process and thus meant an extension of competence.

Since the Treaty of Amsterdam the cooperation procedure has been applied only in certain issues of economic and monetary union ( EMU). In contrast, the co-decision procedure has gained in importance, which the European Parliament has equal footing with the Council as legislator in more and more policy areas.
