Coosje van Bruggen

Coosje van Bruggen ( born June 6, 1942 in Groningen, † January 10, 2009 in Los Angeles ) was an American sculptor, art historian and art critic of Dutch origin. She was artistic partner and wife of the sculptor Claes Oldenburg.

Life and work

After studying art history at the University of Groningen van Bruggen worked from 1967 to 1971 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. From 1971 to 1976 she was a lecturer at the Academy of Art and Industry Enschede. Since 1976, she collaborated with Claes Oldenburg, in 1977 the couple married. 1978 van Bruggen moved to New York, she became U.S. citizen in 1993.

Together with Oldenburg, the artist designed some large sculptures, as well as the Frankfurt standing Inverted Collar and Tie. Since the early 1980s, van Bruggen worked as an independent curator and art critic, in 1982 she was a member of the selection committee of the documenta 7 Van Bruggen published writings on the early works of Oldenburg, on the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the work of Bruce Nauman. The sculptures van Bruggens be associated with the style pop art.
