Copper Canyon
The Barranca del Cobre ( Copper Canyon German, English. Copper Canyon ) is a facility located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua mountain range of the Sierra Madre Occidental, which was created by former strong river and lies partly on a populated area of Tarahumara Indians. The on about 25,000 km ² up to 1800 m deep and 50 km long canyon system is one of the largest in North America and a total of four times as large as the Grand Canyon. The name derives from the Copper Canyon copper-colored canyon outcroppings, piedra Cobriza, now and at the same time called a canyon contained in the system.
The six deepest canyons in the Barranca del Cobre are:
- Barranca de Urique / Urique Canyon (1870 m)
- Barranca de Sinforosa / Sinforosa Canyon (1799 m)
- Barranca de Batopilas / Batopilas Canyon (1799 m)
- Barranca del Cobre / Copper Canyon (1759 m)
- Barranca de Tararecua / Tararecua Canyon (1425 m)
- Barranca de Otero / Otero Canyon ( 983 m)
At the lowest point of the canyon, in the Urique Canyon, the largest group of Mexican indigenous people, the " Rarámuri " lives. Throughout the Copper Canyon is also winds the elaborately built railroad " Chepe ", which runs from Los Mochis to Chihuahua, the mountains high up in places from which people may take far-reaching views into the gorge area. Creel and Guachochi the places are good starting points to reach the various canyons.
