Copper River Highway

The Copper River Highway is a road in Alaska, which runs from Cordova in eastern Prince William Sound from 90 km in a north-easterly direction along the former route of the Copper River and Northwestern Railway to the Copper River. It is part of Alaska Route 10

Construction of the original to the Edgerton Highway planned in Chitina road was 1945. The one million U.S. dollars Bridge, one built in the early 20th century by JP Morgan and the Guggenheim family railway bridge that had served until 1939 to transport the mined in Kennicott copper, was rebuilt as part of the highway construction for use as a road bridge.

The construction was to just behind the bridge progressed, as the Good Friday earthquake of 1964 severely damaged the bridge and the construction stopped. The bridge was temporarily repaired and used again. The complete restoration was finished in 2005.

Course

The highway begins at the dock of the Alaska Marine Highway in the north and Cordova's first runs in an easterly direction. After about 11 km, the landscape of forested mountains passes into the open delta of the Copper River. The area is called " the Gap". After another 7km the access road to the Sheridan Glacier branches. After 43 km of Highway crosses several bridges on the main channels of the Copper River Delta, swings to the north and follows the east bank of the river up to one million U.S. dollars Bridge ⊙ 60.673694-144.747856 after 77.5 km. A few kilometers after the bridge ends the highway as access road.
