Coptology

The Coptic Studies is an academic discipline and a field of research that deals with the Coptic language, culture, history and religion. As Coptic period is defined as the period that begins with the Christianization of Northeastern Africa, especially Egypt and Nubia, and which extends to the present day.

Subject

As a university of study taught in Humanities or Cultural Studies in Philosophy and Theology faculties. In many cases, the Coptic Studies is offered within the field of Egyptology, as the Coptic language is the final stage of the Egyptian language. In the field of art and material culture, there is strong overlap with the Christian Archaeology and Byzantine Studies. In recent years, the teaching posts have been cut at German universities in the subject Coptic Studies.
