Coraciiformes

European Roller ( Coracias garrulus )

The coraciiformes ( Coraciiformes ) or Racke -like are an order of very different, mainly tropical and very colorful birds, which have a wide variety of lifestyles. They only have a common characteristic: The toes tend to differ from the norm, they are partially fused together.

System

The Handbook of the Birds of the World is one of the following ten families to Racke birds.

  • Kingfishers ( alcedinidae )
  • Erdracken ( Brachypteraciidae )
  • Kurole ( Leptosomatidae )
  • Hornbills ( Bucerotidae )
  • Rollers ( Coraciidae )
  • Bee-eater or lockers ( Meropidae )
  • Sägeracken or motmots ( Momotidae )
  • Todi ( Todidae )
  • Hoopoe ( Upupidae )
  • Tree Hoopoes ( Phoeniculidae )

Recent phylogenetic studies have come to the conclusion that the Kurol ( Leptosomus discolor) no Racke bird, but systematically isolated and that the coraciiformes are a paraphyletic taxon in relation to the woodpeckers ( Piciformes ), as these, the sister group of a clade with the families of hornbills hoopoes and tree hoopoes are.

The family relationships by Hackett et al. provides the following cladogram is:

Bee-eater ( Meropidae )

Erdracken ( Brachypteraciidae )

Rollers ( Coraciidae )

Kingfishers ( alcedinidae )

Sägeracken ( Momotidae )

Todi ( Todidae )

Woodpeckers ( Piciformes )

Hornbills ( Bucerotidae )

Hornbills ( Bucorvidae )

Hoopoe ( Upupidae )

Tree Hoopoes ( Phoeniculidae )

Trogons ( Trogoniformes )

Kurole ( Leptosomatiformes )

Thus, the monophyly of the coraciiformes is preserved by the establishment of the new order Bucerotiformes with the families of hornbills, hornbills, Hoopoes and tree Hoopoes. The Racke birds include only the Racken, Erdracken, Sägeracken, kingfishers, bee-eaters and Todi. Racke birds and woodpeckers are sister groups, the common taxon is sister group of Bucerotiformes, all three are together sister taxon of trogons ( Trogonidae ). The Kurol is the sister species of the four above-mentioned orders.
