Corato

Corato is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 48 339 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Bari, in Puglia. The provincial capital of Bari is about 40 kilometers away to the east. The municipality borders the province of Barletta -Andria -Trani. Portions of the township Corato belong to the Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia.

History

The town's origins point to a foundation in earlier times ( 3rd century BC ). According to legend, the name of the city from a Roman named Caius Oratus (C. Oratus ) is derived.

The city's history is closely connected with the Norman colonization of southern Italy. Here also led the Via Appia Traiana along. Under Alfonso V it was the end of the 15th century part of the Kingdom of Aragon. Corato was a little later to get part of the Könoigreichs Naples later in the possession of the Carafa family.

Traffic

Corato is located just south of the motorway A 14 and on the Strada Statale 378 A rail connection to the railway line Bari - Barletta to Bari is available.

Twinning

Corato maintains since 1999 a partnership with the French city of Grenoble in the Isere department.
