The museum focuses on American art. The permanent exhibition also comprises works by Rembrandt van Rijn, Eugène Delacroix, Edgar Degas, Thomas Gainsborough, John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Edward Hopper, Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell and Gene Davis. Also find changing temporary exhibitions in the gallery instead, primarily contemporary art on the second floor. The Corcoran Gallery is the oldest and nongovernmental art museum in Washington DC

In 1869 the gallery of William Wilson Corcoran was founded. Initially, the museum was located at the 17Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in the building that now houses the Renwick Gallery. 1897, the museum's collection had grown so large that a new larger building at 17th Street and New York Avenue was required. Was designed the new museum building by Ernest Flagg in Beaux -Arts architecture.
