Cordell Jackson

Cordell Jackson ( born July 15, 1923 as Cordell Miller in Pontotoc, Mississippi, † 14 October 2004) was an American rockabilly musician, actress and label operator.

Life

Childhood and youth

Cordell Jackson was born in 1923 as the daughter of Fiddlers in Mississippi. She learned instruments such as guitar, piano and upright bass, and later mandolin, banjo and harmonica. However, she became known for her electric guitar, a Hagström. In 1943 she married and moved to Memphis, Tennessee.

Career

After a few years in the local scene, in which she not only played music but also wrote songs for himself and others, recorded and produced, in 1956 she founded her own label, Moon Records. Jackson had previously recorded songs in Sam Phillips' studio and trying to get a recording contract with his label Sun Records, but failed again and again. They therefore followed the advice of guitarist Chet Atkins, and founded her own label. After Jackson had only published their own single Beboppers ' Christmas b / w Rock and Roll Christmas here, soon brought her even rockabilly singles of other artists on the market. The most famous Moon -Act was Allen Page and the Big Four. In 1959 she sold her recording equipment and ended the production of Moon Records as the active label.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Jackson developed a comedy act called Maxie Pearl (as alter ego to popular country comedy character Minnie Pearl), recorded a song called Football Widow and produced a Christian radio broadcast.

Making a comeback in the national and international rockabilly scene she succeeded during the rockabilly and roots-rock revival in the 1980s by the attention of younger artists such as Tav Falco and Alex Chilton. She took on new pieces and reactivated the Moon Records label.

You became a legend as " The Rockin 'Granny " ("the rock granny "). Their trademark were next to the electric guitar a deliberately old-fashioned pre-war dress. It was considered extremely humourous, offbeat and independent. Even in old age she appeared very youthful and peppy.

In 1991 she joined forces with Brian Setzer on in a Budweiser advertising.

October 14, 2004 Cordell Jackson succumbed to a long illness.
