The Cordillera Oriental ( German "Eastern Mountain Range " ) is a chain of mountain arcs in the eastern Andes of Peru.

Location

The Cordillera Oriental of Peru extends to almost the entire length of the country over 1330 km in a north-south direction, from the border with Ecuador in the north to the Cordillera Apolobamba in Bolivia in the south.

The highest elevations of this extensive mountain arc lie mainly in the southern part, where to find the Ausangate is the fourth highest peak in Peru.

Structure

From north to south the Peruvian Cordillera Oriental is divided into the following sections (in brackets the respective highest peak ):

  • Cordillera Oriental North - 52.6 thousand km ²
  • Cordillera Azul - 33,000 km ²
  • Central Cordillera Oriental - 38.3 thousand km ² ( 2,450 m Pico Sira )
  • Cordillera Vilcabamba - 31,000 km ² ( Salcantay 6264 m)
  • Cordillera Oriental Amazonia - 47.6 thousand km ² ( Cerro Atalaya 4382 m)
  • Cordillera Urubamba - 7300 km ² ( Sahuasiray snowcapped mountains 5818 m)
  • Cordillera Vilcanota - 13.3 thousand km ² ( Ausangate 6384 m)
  • Cordillera Carabaya - 17,000 km ² ( Schio 5800 m)
  • Cordillera Oriental West - 23,000 km ² ( Cerro Pachamama 4120 m)
