Cordillera Real (Bolivia)

Cordillera Real, Lake Titicaca

The Cordillera Real ( German: Cordillera ) is a high mountain range in the Andean highlands of Bolivia.

The Cordillera Real is a granite - fold mountain east of the capital La Paz with a length of about 125 km and a width of 20 km. The Cordillera has seven six-thousand, from north to south:

  • Pico del Norte ( 6070 m)
  • Illampú ( 6368 m)
  • Ancohuma ( 6427 m)
  • Chearoco ( 6127 m)
  • Chachacomani ( 6074 m)
  • Huayna Potosi ( 6088 m)
  • Illimani ( 6462 m)

Parts of the mountain range are still glaciated due to their proximity to the Amazonian lowlands and from there ascending moist air masses, but due to the global climate change, glaciation is also here - as in other regions of the world - sharply.

In a broader sense, the term " Cordillera Real" is also used for the entire Bolivian mountain chain of the Bolivian border to Oruro, see Cordillera Central.
