The town of Corfu ( Kerkyra in Greek Κέρκυρα ( f sg )) is the capital of the Greek island of Corfu and community. It lies on the east coast on a sloping to the northwest foothills, has an international airport and has a safe harbor, which is by shipping lines with Brindisi, Venice, Patras and Igoumenitsa in conjunction.

The core city with 25.212 inhabitants formed until 2010 the center of a municipality, which was expanded in 2010 to a new large village of Corfu, which covers the entire island of Corfu and the Diapontia Islands. History

Approx. 590 BC was built in ancient Kerkyra Temple of Artemis, of which only a few remnants remain. The old fort ( Palaió Froúrio ) was built in the 16th century by the Venetians. To ensure the fortress a channel between protective walls and the adjacent mainland was dug. The first fortress was home to the city until they finally expanded to the west.

Start of construction 1576 End of construction 1645. There are many underground tunnels running under the New Fortress, which extend to the Old Fortress and connect them together.
