Cori, Lazio

Cori is a city in the province of Latina in the Italian region Latium, located about 11,010 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). It is 55 km southeast of Rome and 25 km north of Latina.

Geography

Cori is in the foothills of the Monti Lepini above the Pontine plain. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Lepini e Ausoni.

District of Cori is the village Giulianello with a historic town center.

The neighboring municipalities are Artena (RM ), Cisterna di Latina ( LT), Larian (RM ), Montelanico (RM ), Norma ( LT), Rocca Massima (LT) and Segni (RM ).

History

Cori is one of the oldest cities in Italy. According to legend, the ancient Cora said to have been founded in the 2nd millennium BC. 642 BC led to a Ancus Publicius latinisches army against Rome. But it was only in 415 BC came under Roman Cora violence. In the 3rd century BC Cora fought on the side with Rome against Hannibal. Then there are hardly any reports of Cora, but the preserved ruins are evidence of a bloom in the imperial period. It was not until the migration period brought the decline of the city.

Cori was mentioned in writing again until the year 1114, when Pope Paschal II patronized the establishment of the Benedictines. In the 13th century Cori was a free commune in 1363 until it came to the Papal States, in which it remained until 1870.
