Coria, Cáceres

Coria is a Spanish city in the autonomous region of Extremadura.

Coria lies in the province of Cáceres on the Rio Alagon and counts 13,010 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). Coria is a bishopric (see also List of bishops of Coria ).

History

The Caurium founded by the Romans was conquered by the Moors in the 5th century by the Visigoths, in the 8th century and then was part of the Emirate of Badajoz. 1079 and 1085 it fell first to Castile, in 1109 it conquered the Moors ( Almoravids ) back. Again Castilian 1142 (1168 handed over to the Knights Templar ), it was reconquered in 1174 and in 1190 rebuilt by the Moors ( Almohad ) before it finally fell in 1200 to Castile.
