Corme-Écluse

Corme- Ecluse is a West commune with 1072 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Charente -Maritime in the Poitou -Charentes.

Location

The place is located in Saintonge about 27 km ( driving distance ) south-west of Saintes and about 20 kilometers east of the Gironde estuary at Royan. The capital of the canton, Saujon, is only about 7 kilometers north-west; The two neighboring communities Rétaud and Rioux are each about 15 kilometers to the northeast and east.

Economy

Agriculture and Viticulture determine for centuries the economic life of the village. Since the 1980s, tourism has been added ( Rentals ) as a source of income.

History

About the history of Corme- Ecluse is next to nothing known or published. However, it is narrated that the lavish medieval church belonged to a priory of the Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes. This then formed in the following centuries the crystallization nucleus for the further development of the town.

  • Of the conventual buildings of a former Dominican Monastery has not survived.
  • South of the town are a restored windmill ( Moulin de la Motte de Pons ) and a shelter of dry masonry ( gabi rotting ).
