History

The district Rockensüß was first mentioned in the year 1274 and the hamlet of King Forest in 1351. The actual settlement Cornberg was not created until 1938-1941 for the Mining and Metallurgical Workers of the copper shale mining in Richelsdorfer mountains and at the time was in the district of Rockensüß. It is the only resettlement in the old district of Rotenburg since the Thirty Years' War. On 1 April 1954, the former districts of Rockensüß, Mönchhosbach and diamond Hausen was the new community Cornberg formed from this settlement, as well as parts.

Since 1296 here was a Benedictine monastery, a daughter house of the abbey Hersfeld, which had previously been home to a convent of St. Nicholas in Bubenbach. The monastery Cornberg was repealed in 1526 and converted to an agricultural Hofgut the Landgrave of Hessen.

1574 was Philipp Wilhelm von Cornberg, not a legitimate son of Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hesse -Kassel, the former monastery and its lands by his father as a hereditary fief and named themselves after. Philipp Wilhelm sold it in 1598 to his half brother, Landgrave Moritz of Hesse- Kassel, who handed it in 1627 as part of the Rotenburger quart of the sons from his second marriage. It was a bailiff, was up to the extinction of the Landgrave of Hesse -Rotenburg in 1834 in their possession, and then fell back to the Electorate of Hesse.

By 1964 the former monastery was a state domain, from 1946 owned by the State of Hesse. The dilapidated commercial and residential buildings around the monastery were demolished 1957-1973. Only the gothic quadrangle is obtained; it was from 1990 to 1994 set repaired. The former two-aisled church ( the north wing of the cloister quadrangle ) to the nuns' gallery surviving is now used as a cultural stage. In two other wings, the community center and museum are housed. In the east wing there is a catering operation.

From 1945 to 1949, the whole place Cornberg and the former monastery were UNRRA DP camp. Here former forced laborers from the Soviet Union and Poland were mainly housed. Many of them migrated from here to Canada or the U.S..
