Cornelis Pietersz. Bega

Cornelis Pietersz. Bega (* 1631 or 1632 in Haarlem; † August 27, 1664 probably due to the plague ) was a Dutch Baroque painter and etcher.

Life

Cornelis Bega was the son of the sculptor and goldsmith Pieter Jansz. Begijn. His mother Mary came from a wealthy family of painters and was the daughter of the Haarlem artist Cornelis van Haarlem and his wife Marietje Deyman. Violated by his father because of his reckless way of life, which is why he took the name of Bega, he was later a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade.

Preferably he painted, as well as his teacher van Ostade, genre paintings. These are scenes from the so-called lower circles of people Lebes, especially from business houses and peasant societies, drinkers, smokers, alchemists, astrologers, and the like for the subject. The 34 known of him etchings deal with the same materials as his paintings.

Among other things, he also etched in copper. For those exported by him, known Scroll include: The Tavern, The farmhouse with eight pawns, The farmer at the window ( complete with all the cold needle ) and the young hostess with two old farmer.

From 1653 to 1654 he traveled with the artists Dirck Helmbreker, Vincent van der Vinne and Guillam Dubois by Germany, Switzerland and France. 1654 he joined the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke of his hometown. Beginning of the 1650s must Bega with the equally -based artist Leendert van Haarlem have been friends of Cooghen who portrayed him several times. After 1660 his paintings became more colorful and focused more on details and textures.

Bega images can be found in almost all major European galleries such as the Louvre in Paris, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Munich, St. Petersburg and Dresden and Berlin.
