Cornelius Anckarstjerna

Anckarstjerna Cornelius ( born as Cornelius Thyssen ) ( born January 25, 1655 in Stockholm, † April 21, 1714 at Castle Knutstorp, Skåne County Province) was a Swedish Admiral and Baron.

Family

Anckarstjerna was born on 25 January 1655 in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, the son of Captain Didrik Thyssen. He was probably related to Martin ( Thyssen ) Anckarhjelm, which must be born at the same time and also joined the Swedish naval services.

Ackarstjerna was married twice. The first marriage he went in with Kroger Elisabeth, daughter of Vice- Admiral Otto Siöstierna. After her death he married the daughter of Gustaf Adolph Sparre. Her name was Margareta Elisabet and she lived from 1671 to 1724.

Military career

As a very young man Anckarstjerna learned the seafaring and was admitted as a boatman in the Swedish Navy. On October 26, 1678 he was raised to the peerage and was named after the Swedish king Karl XI Anckarstjerna. awarded. A large portion of this appointment was probably the fierce defense of the ship Kalmar castle during a battle with the Danish Navy. As captain of this ship is Anckarstjerna refused to hand over the ship of the Danish fleet. When the battle seemed hopeless he sank the ship, so it does not fall into the hands of the Danes.

During the landing at Humlebæk in 1700 Anckerstjerna had command of the entire Swedish fleet. In 1704 Anckerstjerna tried to conquer St. Petersburg, together with the Swedish general Johann Georg Maydell the new capital of Russia. The conquest failed, because the infantry under Maydell did not manage to close the siege ring around the city and withdrew.

On December 29, 1712 he retired from military service and was promoted to lieutenant general.

He died on April 21, 1714 at his estate in Knutstorp castle.
