Cornelius Krieghoff

Cornelius David Krieghoff ( born June 19, 1815 in Amsterdam, † March 8, 1872 in Chicago) is one of the most famous Canadian painters of the 19th century. His work often shows the lives of the French-born rural population of Canada and the First Nations tribes.

The et al trained in Germany Krieghoff arrived in New York in 1836, where he joined the army and during the Seminole Wars anfertigte drawings which he later used as the basis for oil paintings. In 1840 he married and moved to Montreal, Canada. Here he made images of people living in the nearby Parco Kahnawake Mohawk Reserve. End of 1871, after extensive travels through Europe, he moved from Quebec to Chicago, where he died a few months later.
