Cornelius Lawrence

Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence ( born February 28, 1791 in Flushing, Queens, New York, † February 20, 1861 ) was an American politician. He represented from 1833 to 1834 and the New York State in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence attended community schools. In 1812 he moved to New York City, where he pursued commercial transactions. His son, James Ogden Lawrence, was born in 1824. Politically, he was a member of the Jacksonian Group. In the congressional elections of 1832 he was in the third electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded Churchill C. Cambreleng, Campbell P. White and Gulian C. Verplanck took on March 4, 1833 which previously together represented the third district in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, he appeared on 14 May 1834 by his Congress seat back. Then he was 1834-1837 Mayor of New York City. He was director of several banks and trust companies. From 1845 to 1849 he was tax collector ( collector of customs) in the Port of New York. He died on 20 February 1861 in Flushing and was then buried in the family cemetery in Bayside. His cousin was Congressman Effingham Lawrence.
