Cornelius P. Comegys

Cornelius Parsons Comegys ( born January 15, 1780 in Kent County, Maryland, † January 27, 1851 in Dover, Delaware ) was an American politician and 1837-1841 Governor of the State of Delaware.

Early years and political rise

Cornelius Comegys attended the public schools in Baltimore. Around 1800, he moved to Delaware, where he worked as a farmer. During the British -American War of 1812, he rose in the militia of his state up to lieutenant colonel.

Between 1809 and 1811 was Comegys tax commissioner in Kent County. After that, he was from 1811 to 1817 Member of which he became president in the House of Representatives from Delaware. From 1829 to 1830, he should be a member of this chamber and again from 1818 to 1834 he was Minister of Finance of Delaware. Cornelius Comegys joined his four-year term on 17 January 1837. During his tenure, the governor was working on a reform of the judiciary, the domestic politics came, however, with strong resistance. He also promoted the further expansion of the school system and infrastructure. In 1840, he could not be re-elected directly on the basis of a constitutional clause. Therefore, he resigned from his post on 17 January 1841.

After the end of his governorship to Comegys withdrew from politics and devoted himself to his private affairs. Cornelius Comegys died in January 1851. He was married twice and had eleven children. His son Benjamin was later president of the National Bank in Philadelphia and another son, Joseph, was from 1856 to 1857 U.S. Senator and later chief judge in Delaware.
