Cornell Dupree

Cornell Dupree ( born December 19, 1942 in Fort Worth, Texas; † May 8, 2011 ) was an American musician. The guitarist was involved as a session musician with over 2500 recording sessions in the field of popular music, soul jazz, fusion and rhythm and blues.

Life and work

Cornell Dupree played with twenty years in the R & B group of King Curtis. Soon after, he began to work, so for Brook Benton ( " Rainy Night in Georgia " ) and artists such as Lou Rawls, Paul Simon, Barbra Streisand, Harry Belafonte, Lena Horne, Roberta Flack, Joe Cocker, Michael Bolton or Mariah Carey as a session musician. Dupree was also from 1967 to 1976, the touring band of Aretha Franklin and participated on numerous albums of jazz, soul jazz, funk and fusion genre, as with Carla Bley ( Dinner Music ), Billy Cobham (Total Eclipse), Hank Crawford, The Crusaders, Miles Davis ( "Red China Blues" in 1973, with the Get up It), Les McCann ( Invitation to Openness ), Eddie Harris, Freddie King, Rahsaan Roland Kirk ( Blacknuss, 1971), Herbie Mann and Esther Phillips, the most developed on the Atlantic label, also as an orchestra member big band productions of Bobby Hutcherson, Elvin Jones, Grant Green ( Blue Breakbeats ), Grover Washington Jr. or Bernard Purdie. With the drummer Dupree took under his own name in 1974, the album Teasin ', followed by Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Shadow Dancing (1978). During this time he was a member of the studio band stuff, which was under contract with Warner Brothers and four albums grossed. From the late 1980s, Dupree still recorded some jazz albums; his album Coast to Coast (1988 ) was nominated for a Grammy. In 2006 he entered Vienna with Les McCann and saxophonist Ronnie Cuber on in the all- star band Soul Survivors.
