Cornouaille

Cornwall ( Breton: Bro cores or happy ) is a historical region of Finistère in Brittany. She was a kingdom and later a part of the Duchy of Brittany in the Middle Ages. (see list ruler Brittany and the Diocese of Cornwall )

Etymology

The name leads to confusion with the English county of Cornwall, which is in France called also Cornouailles ( plural of Cornwall ). This is supported by the British from Brittany when they mean Brittany.

Location

The Cornwall ranges from the Pointe du Raz in äußertes north west to Quimperlé in the southeast. To the north it borders on the hinterland of Brest, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean. About the later capital and the bishopric Quimper (now about 60,000 inhabitants) of Cornwall extended the historical region eastward to the vicinity of Landerneau, Morlaix and Quimperlé. The coastline of the Bay of Audierne ranges from the peninsula of Cap Sizun with the Pointe du Raz to the southern peninsula of Presqu'ile de Penmarc'h (her name comes from the pictorial Horsehead this peninsula ) and the Eckmuhl Lighthouse.

Part of the historic Cornwall, is the western part of the Bigouden and its main town, Pont- l'Abbé. The traditional high, kind to pulp towers head coverage of the female population ( the Coiffe Bigoudène ) gave the Bigouden his name. Supposedly there was a silent protest against the arbitrary persecution by the so-called stamp paper revolt in 1675 by Louis XIV. Had the time as a reminder and a tear down numerous steeples of Bigouden. Once this region was very prosperous and extended over the Penmarc'h peninsula between the banks of the Odet and Goyen to the Bay of Audierne. Even among the Bretons they led a life of their own: " Hebken " - " So we are and so we remain " was the motto of life, similar to the " I mused to me " of Bavaria.

The country is characterized by walled parishes through which according to ancient tradition, the world of the living and the dead will be disconnected. Also Calvary, the oldest ever is Tronoën, are common here.

Structures

Numerous megalithic (La Foret Fouesnant, Lesconil, Pointe de la Torche ( the tip of the torch ), Pointe de Souc'h, Saint Goazec and Ti Ar Boudiged ), menhirs, alignments (stone rows of Lagatjar ) and structures of the upper class are still on Finistère, to marvel at the end of the world.

Legend

In Plomarc'h at the " Plage du Ris " is said to have resided in a now ruined Castle Marc'h a king, to be matched with the King brand from Tristan und Isolde. Later, have fled to escape from the sinking city of Ys to Quimper from here the king Gradlon.
