History

The Corona del Mar State Beach was until the 1930s a popular spot among surfers. However, the construction of a pier at the port of Newport Beach drew largely from the surf and now focused on The Wedge. The shaft can reach great heights with optimum swell. Since usually prevail all year round good conditions, this stretch of beach is always populated by many surfers.

The surfer legend Duke Kahanamoku was used in 1925 at Corona del Mar State Beach as the first man a surfboard for rescue purposes. Kahanamoku was doing a fishing boat to help, which was capsized in the strong surf.
