Coronation Island

The Coronation Island (English Coronation Iceland ) is an entity belonging to the South Orkney Islands in the Southern Ocean. It is located just inside the protected by the Antarctic Treaty territory.

The island is about 40 km long and 5-13 km wide and 450 km ², the largest of the South Orkney Islands. It is glaciated to about 85% and reached Mount Nivea a height of up to 1,265 m above sea level.

The island was discovered in December 1821 by the American sealer Nathaniel Palmer and British Captain George Powell. Powell honored with the name of Coronation ( Coronation ) its rulers George IV, who was in 1821 crowned King of Great Britain.

The British refuge Sandefjord Bay on the western tip of the island was established on February 12, 1945 gravel. In 1956, she was terminated.
