Sardinia et Corsica was officially handed over after the first Punic War 237 BC by Carthage to Rome and declared 227 BC after Sicilia for a second province. Before handing over the later province was declared in a treaty between Rome and Carthage to entmilitarisiertem neutral territory, which had provoked riots against Carthage. First governor of the rank of praetor Marcus Valerius was Laevinus. Residence of the governor and thus capital of the province was Carales (Cagliari).

Already 259 BC Corsica was occupied by Lucius Cornelius Scipio. The Phokäerstadt Alalia ( Aleria ) seems then to have been conquered, but did not come until 238/237 BC finally under Roman rule.

The modern province of Nuoro in the east of the island of Sardinia served initially as a retreat of the natives, from where took them regularly raids on Roman territory, which the Romans led to the construction of a limit. Of these barbarians, the name of the local region Barbagie derived.

In the reorganization of the provinces in 27 BC by Augustus, the province was first senatorial, n in year 6 BC, but the imperial province. Until 67, when the province was senatorial again, it was under the administration of a procurators, which may be associated with further necessary military actions against the indigenous people.

In the 4th century, the province was divided into two islands.

456 Sardinia was conquered by the Vandals, and Roman rule came to an end.

Economy and culture of the province

Economically, the province was mainly as a supplier of grain, horses, mineral raw materials and weapons of importance.

From Cicero's speeches is known that the ruling families of some cities contributed Punic name shortly before the Christian era. Archeological digs indicate a sluggish Romanization. However, the colonization went in the coastal areas ahead more rapidly than at home.
