Cosimo Pinto

Cosimo Pinto ( born March 14, 1943 in Novara ) is an Italian former boxer. He was Olympic champion in 1964 in Tokyo at light heavyweight.

Career

Cosimo Pinto grew up in Novara and began as a teenager with the boxes. He joined soon in the Italian armed forces and was intensively promoted there. At the age of 20 he had developed alongside Giulio Saraudi best Italian amateur boxer in the light heavyweight division.

In 1963 he started for Italy in the Mediterranean Games in Naples, where she won the light heavyweight with a victory in the finals over the French Cosimo Bruno. In the same year he was also the tournament victory in the pre-Olympic Games in Tokyo succeeded by a tech. Knockout victory in the third round of the Japanese Tadayuki Maruyama.

In May of 1964 he won at the CISM World Military Championship in Tunis at middleweight. He defeated while the West German Starter Schneider by demolition in the 1st round. How important was the Italian military this victory, it can be seen from the fact that Cosimo Pinto had to work off nearly 8 kg for this championship to start in the middleweight division, since was used in the light heavyweight Giulio Saraudi. In view of the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, Cosimo Pinto wanted to start again at light heavyweight, a risky venture.

Cosimo Pinto put these drastic times but well off as you could see from his result at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. It was namely Olympic champion in light heavyweight. On the way, he defeated Rudi Lubbers, The Netherlands, 5-0 judges 'votes and Jürgen Schlegel from the GDR 4-1 judges' votes on points. In the semifinals he was demolition conqueror of the Bulgarians Alexander Nikolov and in the final he managed a brief 3-2 points victory over the Soviet starter Alexei Kiselyov.

In the following years Cosimo Pinto dosed his good starts. It was only in the years 1965 and 1967 Italian champion in the light heavyweight division. It was not until 1967, when the European Championship of amateur boxers took place in Rome, he again took part in an international championship. He won there in the light heavyweight division against Georgi Stankov from Bulgaria by disqualification in the 3rd round and defeated Kurt Baumgarten from Switzerland on points. But counter- Peter Gerber from the Federal Republic of Germany, he lost in the semifinals by techn. KO in the 3rd round and finished in 3rd place.

He then joined, only 25 years old, and devoted himself his military career. Professional boxer, he has never been.
