Costa Smeralda

The Costa Smeralda is a part of the north-eastern coast of Sardinia. In the north, it is of Palau, in the south of Olbia. The name comes from the emerald -like color of the water.

The coastline is very rugged and has among many jagged rocks some fine sandy beaches.

The Costa Smeralda is characterized as a holiday by the fact that most of the land owned by a private consortium located around Karim Aga Khan, has bought the shepherds in the 1960s the country. Through the influence of the consortium could be prevented until now eyesores, environmental destruction and mass tourism. A building may not be more than three stories high and it has to fit into the landscape on the Costa Smeralda. Power lines must always be installed underground.

Parts of the James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me " were 1976/1977 turned on the Costa Smeralda.

Every September is held here the sailing regatta Rolex Swan Cup, which is being organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
