The jewelry birds ( Cotingidae ) are a family in the order of perching birds ( Passeriformes ). Jewelry birds are found in the tropics and subtropics of South America.
These are short-legged, small to large forest birds of different colors. The males of this family often have a splendid and colorful plumage. The females, however, are dyed a little dull.
They live solitary and feed on fruit and insects.
Reproduction
Some species breed in tree or burrows, others build a nest, which is a shallow well in a crotch or on only one side open, the nest may be on a branch tip. A built on rock nest of mud and earth is possible. Jewelry birds lay isabell or olive-colored eggs, which are dotted dark brown and gray. The eggs are incubated by the female alone only.
