Cotoneaster

Illustration of Ordinary cotoneaster ( Cotoneaster integerrimus )

The Zwergmispeln ( Cotoneaster ) are a genus of pome fruit crops ( Pyrinae ) from the rose family ( Rosaceae ). The genus includes about 90 species.

The natural range is the Palaearctic region ( temperate Asia, Europe, North Africa), with an emphasis on the Himalayas and southwestern China.

Description

Cotoneaster species grow as deciduous and evergreen shrubs, rarely there are trees. The growth habit ranges from prostrate ground cover up to 15 meters high small trees. The branches are not armored ( contrast to the Pyracantha species ( Pyracantha ) ). The change-constant leaves are simple with a short petiole. The leaf margin is smooth. The stipules are small.

The flowers are sometimes individually and in a few small bundles, but mostly in schirmtraubigen inflorescences. The hermaphroditic, flowers are radial symmetry fünfzählig. The five short sepals are also still clearly visible on the fruit. The five petals are white, cream, pink to light purple or red. There are ten to 20 (rarely to 22) available stamens. There are two to five under permanent to semi- permanent under carpels present. The two to five pens are free.

The apple-shaped fruit is red to brownish red, or orange to black, fleshy sepals are still clearly visible and they contain only one seed.

All parts of the plant, but especially the fruit are slightly toxic.

Use

In temperate latitudes, some species or their varieties are planted as ornamental trees, for example, as a groundcover. The ground-covering Cotoneaster species are often planted as street greenery in cities. The genus Cotoneaster is one of the host plants of fire blight.
