Cottens, Vaud

Cottens ( [ kɔtɑ ], Franco-Provençal [(a) kɔte ː ] ) is a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Cottens is on 579 m above sea level. M., 8 kilometers north- west of the district capital Morges ( straight line ). The former street line village extends on the plateau in the extreme southwest of Gros de Vaud, near the valley of Morges, in the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​2.4 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the gently undulating plateau of the Vaud Mittelland. In the south of the municipality floor extends into the valley of the upper Morges, in the west it is bordered by Bach Combagnou. In a narrow strip, the area extends north into the Bois de la Five, in the 613 m above sea level. M. the highest elevation of Cottens is achieved, and to a left side stream of the Veyron. Population

With 459 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Cottens one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. History

The territory of Cottens was inhabited early on, this is proved by the remains of a settlement from the Roman period. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1041 under the name Chotens. 1049 appeared the name Cotens, later Coctens. The name goes back to the Burgundian personal names Cotto and means for the people of Cotto.

Cottens made ​​since the Middle Ages a small dominion which belonged to the noble fief of the barony Cossonay. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the bailiwick of Morges. After the collapse of the ancien régime Cottens belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Cossonay.
