Cottian Alps, with Monte Viso

The Cozie Alps ( Kottische Alps, French Alps cottiennes, Italian Alpi Cozie ) are a mountain range of the Western Alps on the border between Italy and France (see also Occitania ).

It owes its name, like the Roman province Alpes Cottiae, the Ligurians princes Cottius, ruler of the region Segusio ( Susa ). Cottius turned operated by Augustus the Roman campaign to subjugate the peoples of the Alps ( 13 BC ) does not preclude, but subdued without a fight.

Geography

From the Alps to the north Graian the Cozie Alps by the Maurienne, the Arc are the Col du Mont Cenis and the Dora Riparia separately. In the West they are from the Dauphiné Alps by the Valoloirette, separated Guisane and the Durance valley. In the southwest come to the Ubaye the Provencal Alps. In the south of the Col de Larche and the Stura di Demonte close beyond the Ubayette, the Maritime Alps on.

The Italian part of the Cozie Alps belongs to the northern Italian region of Piedmont. Proportion of them has

  • The province of Cuneo with the nearly parallel valleys of the Po Valley ( headwaters of the Po), the Valle Varaita and Valle Maira and Grana and Stura Valley.

The French part of the Cozie Alps belongs to the region Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

The highest peak is located on the Italian side of the 3841 meter high Monte Viso ( Monviso ).

Grande Traversata delle Alpi

Through the Cozie Alps, the Grande Traversata delle Alpi leads (GTA ), a wide trail, which is based on the old agrarian ways and bridle paths.

Via Alpina

The Via Alpina, a new cross-border long-distance hiking trails of the entire Alpine Arc from Trieste to Monaco by pulling with five runs on their way Blue with 19 stages through the Cozie Alps as follows:

  • Stage D34 from Rifugio Stellina to Refuge du Petit Mont Cenis. The first part of this stage still runs through the Graian until near the Lac du Mont Cenis the Cozie Alps be entered.
