Couillet, Belgium

Couillet is, a city district of the Belgian town of Charleroi on the Sambre in the province of Hainaut.

History

Couillet was already in the Carolingian period, site of a monastery. On the foundations of the Church of Saint -Laurent was built in the 11th century.

In the 19th century became Couillet like almost all towns in the coalfield from Charleroi to the industrial community. In Couillet the industrialist Ernest Solvay established the first factory for the industrial production of soda from common salt or Glauber's salt to supply the chemical industry with it.

In the 1960s, the decline of the coal and steel industry met ( closure of the mines ) difficult the community. Nevertheless, they still had in 1977 almost 15,000 inhabitants, as it rose by municipal reform as a suburb in the city of Charleroi.

Sports

The football club, founded anno 1919 " Royale Association Cercle Sportif ( RCSA ) Couillet " (Eng.: Royal Association Sportkreis ) plays in the season 2009/10 in the Fourth Belgian League.
