Council for Scientific and Industrial Research

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR ) ( German: Council for Scientific and Industrial Research ) is South Africa's central and most important scientific research and development organization. It was established in 1945 by parliamentary decision. Its campus is located in Pretoria.

CSIR is now the largest research and development organization in Africa, which alone represents about 10 % of the African research budgets. CSIR employs about 3,000 scientists and engineers.

  • Materials research, production research (process engineering )
  • Resources and Environment Research

A well-known development of the CSIR is the ZEBRA battery.
