Council of Constantinople

In Constantinople ecumenical councils were held Opel three that are recognized by the Orthodox, Catholic and evangelical churches most.

  • First Council of Constantinople Opel (second ecumenical council ) 381: There was a final decision on the Arian dispute. It was attended by 150 bishops. First, Meletius of Antioch presided, after his death, Gregory of Nazianzus, then Patriarch of Constantinople Opel.
  • Second Council of Constantinople Opel (the fifth ecumenical council ) 553 under Eutychius, Patriarch of Constantinople Opel. Questions that arose from the decision of the Council of Chalcedon. Convened it was built by Emperor Justinian I.. This Council has, by the way, the pre-existence of the soul condemned, which had been postulated by Origen and some of his students. However, this council has not, as is often falsely claimed, condemned reincarnation - reincarnation is not mentioned at all in the files.
  • Third Council of Constantinople Opel (sixth ecumenical council ) 680-681. It grappled with the Monothelitism. This was represented for a long time by the Maronites, until it entered the union with the Roman Church.
  • Fourth Council of Constantinople Opel, 869-870, is only recognized by the Catholic Church. It was a pretty one-sided as the council and poorly attended affair, ten years later, the decisions have been taken back by another general church council, the council decisions, however, were again used as arguments in the Investiture Controversy.
