Council of Fashion Designers of America

The Council of Fashion Designers of America ( CFDA ) is a non-profit professional association of American fashion designer.

The organization, headquartered in New York City was founded in 1962 by Eleanor Lambert for the purpose of promotion of fashion in the United States. To the President of the CFDA included in the past, among other Norman Norell, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass and Perry Ellis. Since 2006, Diane von Furstenberg is facing as president of the Association a board of directors, the members with their 26 American fashion designer. Currently, the CFDA has to have to be 400 members, all of whom are designers of ladies ' or men's fashion and jewelry and accessories and either U.S. citizens or foreigners with established fashion companies in the United States.

CFDA Fashion Awards

Since 1981, the Association awards annually in the CFDA Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center in New York several prizes to mainly American fashion designers, but also to international fashion designers, for special achievements in the world of fashion. Due to the high reputation that enjoy the accolades in the fashion industry, the gala is also known as "the Oscars of Fashion" ( Oscars of fashion ). Precursor to the CFDA Awards were the so-called Coty Awards ( Coty American Fashion Critics' Awards), who had been called by the perfumer Coty, Inc. under the leadership of Eleanor Lambert in 1942 to life, and from 1943 to 1984 exclusively to American personalities from the fashion industry were awarded. One of the first winners in 1943 included Hattie Carnegie, Lilly roof, and Norman Norell; the last in 1984, Donna Karan, Perry Ellis and Jhane Barnes. The CFDA Awards are presented since the late 1980s in the following categories (up to mid-1980 there had been no fixed categories):

  • The Womenswear Designer of the Year ( women's fashion ), the Menswear Designer of the Year ( Men's fashion ) and the Accessory Designer of the Year (accessories) are the main prizes. They are only awarded to designers who work in the United States and have their headquarters.
  • The Swarovski Award for Womenswear ( women's fashion ), are the Swarovski Award for Menswear ( menswear ) and the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design ( Accessories) Emerging Talent Awards (since 1986, originally: Perry Ellis Award); these are only awarded to designers who work in the United States and have their headquarters.
  • The Eugenia Sheppard Award is in recognition of the American fashion journalist Eugenia Sheppard (1900-1984), since 1987, awarded for outstanding achievements of journalists and an artist whose influence has changed the fashion world.
  • Geoffrey Beene The Lifetime Achievement Award ( 1985 to 2006: Lifetime Achievement Award ) is the price of the life's work. In recognition of the contribution that the American fashion designer Geoffrey Beene (1927-2004) has made to the development of American fashion world, the award was named after him from 2007. Past winners of the past include Marlene Dietrich, Giorgio Armani, Nancy Reagan, Oscar de la Renta, Martha Graham, Ralph Lauren, Gianni Versace, Geoffrey Beene (1997 ), Hubert de Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino Garavani, Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour, Donna Karan, and since 2007, Carolina Herrera, Anna Sui, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs.
  • The International Award is awarded to international designers. The category was 1992 (winner: Gianni Versace) for the first time officially used, although non-American winners of the CFDA had been honored previously.
  • The Eleanor Lambert Award ( since 2002), in recognition of Eleanor Lambert, is a prize for unique contributions to the fashion world and / or posts that deserve recognition in the fashion industry, but do not fall into one of the other categories.
  • The Board of Directors ' Special Tribute is intended since 2003 as a special award for extraordinary contributions to the fashion world. Past winners of the past include Oleg Cassini, Tom Ford, Norma Kamali, Bono, Michael Bloomberg, Michelle Obama and Alexander McQueen ( posthumously ).
  • The Fashion Icon Award has been awarded since 2002 ( no award in 2004 and between 2006 and 2009 ) to persons whose personal style has a strong influence on the fashion world. So far have been honored, among others, Nicole Kidman, Kate Moss, Iman Abdulmajid, Lady Gaga and Johnny Depp.
