Council of Rome

The Synod of Rome in the year 382 has church historical significance because it was set to its compilation and still valid scope of Scripture.

Creation of a mandatory Bible

A synod was the only institution that could make ecclesiastical law. So was from this time by the Synod decision, the Bible from the Old Testament and 27 journals, which included the Apocrypha, as on the later synods of Hippo ( 393) and Carthage ( 397/419 ) was confirmed.

Jerome worked ( 383-420 ) on behalf of the Synod and the Bishop of Rome ( Pope Damasus I ) the Old Latin Bible. From this work arose as a consequence the Vulgate, which is considered the standard Latin edition of the Bible essentially till now ( Nova Vulgata ).

The canon of Scripture was later treated on the following synods and councils: Hippo, Carthage, and the Councils of Nicaea ( 787), Florence, Trent, Vatican I and Vatican II.

Condemnation of Apollinarianismus

Furthermore, the Synod 382, as it did those of Rome (375 ), Antioch ( 378) and Constantinople condemned Opel ( ecumenical, 381 ), the Apollinarianismus.

Apollinaris of Laodicea had tried the shares or the character of the union of divinity and humanity in people to clarify Jesus Christ and had come to the conclusion that the divine nature in Christ completely, but the human is imperfect.

Claim to power of the Roman Church at 382

Parallel to the standardization efforts of this Synod, the entitlement to the supremacy of Rome and his papacy solidified within the Christian church. Pope Damasus, who distinguished himself by a clear will to power, said in this regard: " ... as the Holy Roman Church but is preceded by the other churches in rank - not by synodal, but because it has received the primacy by the word ... of the Lord in the Gospel: on this rock I will build my Church. "

Likewise, claim became increasingly levied on the Christian as the state religion of the Roman Empire: Emperor Gratian ( 367-383 ) was in a much-publicized campaign of Victoria altar in the Senate, which was under previous rulers ever been removed and re-erected at the instance of 382 Bishop Ambrose eliminate definitively what the Roman aristocracy very mustered.
