Councils of Clovesho

Under the name of Council of Clovesho seven council meetings of the Anglo-Saxon church be implemented in the period 742-825. For, besides the bishops and abbots attended the kings of Mercia and their followers, it was not pure synods, but mixed ecclesiastical and secular gatherings. The church matters were decided by the bishops under the presidency of the Archbishop, and the king gave the consent to the arrangements made.

The geographical location of the meeting place Clovesho (also: Clofeshoch, Clofeshoas ) is not clarified beyond doubt. Probably was Clovesho in Mercia and near London. Possible locations are mentioned in the research: Abingdon, Tewkesbury or Cliff -at- Hoo, Kent.
