Countermarked coin

A counter-punch, also countermark, is an attached with a small punch or a punch mark on a coin.

Most coins were provided with counter punches, if they should get a new denomination in the course of a monetary reform or foreign coins should be admitted to a fixed exchange rate for the domestic payments. The counter punch can also takes place for the purpose of appreciation or depreciation and the recognition of the value at the same time rotating impaired similar coins (see mint Freiberg, Grosch time).

Occasionally also sided company or individual coins with counter punches, for example, for testing purposes, or as a promotional tool.
