Countess Palatine Elisabeth Auguste of Sulzbach

Marie Elisabeth Auguste of the Palatinate- Sulzbach (* January 17, 1721 in Mannheim, † August 17, 1794 in Weinheim) was the eldest granddaughter of the Elector Karl Philipp of the Palatinate and by her marriage to Charles IV Theodore himself Electress of the Palatinate and of Bavaria.

Life

Her parents were Joseph Karl von Pfalz- Sulzbach (1694-1729) and Elisabeth of the Palatinate- Neuburg (1693-1728), daughter of Prince Elector Karl III. Philip. On January 17, 1742 she married her cousin Karl Theodor von Pfalz- Sulzbach, the 1742 Elector Palatine and Elector of Bavaria in 1777 also new in December. Their relationship was not very happy. During their marriage only one child, a son named Franz Joseph Ludwig, life was born. The long-awaited heir to the great dismay, however, died of parents one day after his birth on 29 June in 1761. The couple lived since been largely separated. Elisabeth Auguste retired to her castle to Oggersheim back, today only the great pilgrimage church or castle with coat of arms and inscription of the consecration of the Electress exists. From Oggersheim they had at the end of 1793 before the advancing French revolutionary troops to Weinheim, flee on the right side of the Rhine, where she lived in the castle there.

Despite the childlessness of his wife, her lover and his numerous mistresses diverse Karl Theodor repudiated his wife and never went until after her death in 1794 another marriage with the Archduchess Maria Leopoldine of Austria -Este, which was to become the unhappiest period of his life, however,.

Awards

Award on July 5, 1760 with the Russian Order of St. Catherine. Also, even founder and master of the Order of Kurpfälzische lady north of Saint Elizabeth.
