Counts and Dukes of Rethel

Rethel is the name of a historical territory around the town of Rethel in the northern Champagne.

King Henry III. raised in 1581, the county Rethel in favor of Charles of Gonzaga, Duke of Nevers, a duchy, which later passed by purchase to Mazarin. This bequeathed it in 1661 Armand Charles de La Porte, the husband of his niece and heiress Hortensia Mancini, who bore the title of "Duke of Mazarin ," since the marriage.
